I'm really excited about this project - I've been working on it for 18 months now, and the vibe of the band has really brought out the best in the music. The inspiration for the set is pretty diverse - I've been trying to consciously incorporate a lot of things on the forefront of my mind - namely the music of the Mardi Gras Indians, some of the feelings and angles Henry Threadgill manages to achieve, and a lot of the music I have been making with one of my other projects 'Fofoulah' which incorporates west african rhythms on top of a more 'urban' production. It's not grime. It's african music, but it sounds as though its been made on the Enterprise.
Anyway, that's what I've been trying to get into the sound of the band. Another important influence for this project was the lessons in counterpoint I've been having with Hans Koller. Especially writing for 7 horns, its been a real help, and I feel the direction it's given me has help steer it a different way - it's not like a straight up second line thing - hopefully it's something different.
So. ancient counterpoint meets Africa meets New Orleans meets London 2013. I think its about there...ish.
